Welcome to the website for Dee Ukes who started as a Dundee u3a Ukulele Group. Our class began in September 2014 and takes place on a weekly basis @ the Finmill Centre, Fintry, Dundee. Over the last few years we have been on an amazing journey together, which has taken us to so many fabulous places to entertain. The emphasis is always on having as much fun as we can and we certainly do that!

A few of our highlights are when we performed at Perth Concert Hall, The Space Theatre, Scottish Parliament Building at Holyrood, The Caird Hall, HMS Frigate Unicorn and more recently in the fabulous V&A, Dundee.

Nowadays we entertain regularly in Care Homes, Church Groups, Gala Days and many other Community Groups. We do not charge any groups, but if groups are in a position to make a donation, that goes to charity. To date we have raised over ยฃ15000 in total for local charities.ย  In 2024 we are raising funds for Music Therapy.ย

We are also very proud to be the first ever ukulele group to win a National Award for our work in the community. Hands Up for Trad have an annual competition for various categories. In 2017 we won the Community Music Award entitled The Music Cure – Music and Health. We continually see and feel the benefits that playing and sharing music can have on health.

You can keep up to date with what we are up to by visiting our Blog.

We also have a Facebook page.

Currently Dee Ukes class is full but there are other U3A ukulele groups which may have spaces available.

  1. Just a wee note to say thankyou for your wonderful entertainment at our function in Tealing Hall last night. Your range of music was excellent and there was something for everyone. You are such a cheery, positive group and your enthusiasm is infectious. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you so much. (Tealing WRI)

    • Hi John, Thanks for your message. I am pleased you are considering buying a ukulele. As a guitar player I’m sure you will learn the ukulele quite easily. You can buy a ukulele from Rainbow Music, 35 Cowgate, Dundee DD1 2JF or from Kenny’s Music, 29-31 Castle Street, DD1 3AD (ground and second floor). A little outwith the town centre you can also buy one from Vintage Strings, 77 Perth Road, DD1 4HY.
If you go to the Links/Beginners Tips tab on my website, you can get information about the various sizes of ukuleles, tuning, basic chord charts etc. Aquila strings are good quality.
      Good luck. Happy strumming! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi Barry. Thanks for getting in touch. I’m sorry that I don’t know of any tutors in Carnoustie but hope you find someone to get you started. The ukulele is a great little instrument. ๐ŸŽธ

    • Hi Barry. Sorry for delay in replying but I am not long back from holiday in Edinburgh. Unfortunately I am not aware of any ukulele tutors in Carnoustie. Can only suggest you place ad in local newspaper or online eg Facebook. You could also ask at nearest music shop. There are many tutorials on YouTube but it is better to play alongside others. Good luck. ๐ŸŽธ

  3. Hello, I have just came across the site and wondered if you take beginner classes. I would love to learn to play and was excited to find that you are in my area.

I did think about buying one and just learning from YouTube but it would be more fun in a group.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards

    • Hi Jim. Sorry I haven’t got back to you before now, but have just spotted your question. Dee Ukes met last Tuesday for the first time and it was great to hear each other again, despite having to wear masks. My class is currently full and I don’t do beginners’ classes now. However, if you are retired or semi retired Tay Ukes, a Dundee u3a Beginners’ Class is run by Joan Kelso who can be contacted on joankelso@hotmail.co.uk for more details, Good luck with your ukulele journey. You will have lots of fun. ๐Ÿ™‚
