daffodils Spring has sprung. The sun is shining. The snow has gone. 🙂 Dee Ukes started off the week by entertaining at Meadowside St Pauls where they were having a Daffodil Tea. They had also invited members of St Andrews Church to join them. We had a lovely afternoon of songs and fun which was followed by an amazing spread of food. Delicious! Many thanks to the committee members for their hospitality.

Busy Week

Dee Ukes

Dee Ukes @ Lousen Park Sheltered Housing, Carnoustie 12/03/18

Dee Ukes had an amazing time at Lousen Park Sheltered Housing where we walked into a beautifully coloured room with tables set with best china, sandwiches, cream cakes, sweets and name cards which no one was allowed to touch until our entertainment was finished. Home-made sausage rolls and haggis rolls were added to the special afternoon tea. Audience members were a joy to entertain and made us feel very welcome. We have already booked a return visit for Christmas.

Dee Ukes @ St David’s High Kirk (Friendship Club) 16/03/18

Our second gig of the week was at St David’s High Kirk where the hardy members of the Friendship Club braved the wet and windy weather conditions to come along and have a great time. They joined in with all the songs and one brave person had a go at the Slosh. Brilliant! We loved all the tasty cakes as well. Thanks.

    • My Guy – coming along well, but will try sa faster tempo next week
    • End of the Line – sounding good
    • Chatanooga Choo Choo – getting better every time we play it
    • Spread A Little Happiness – sounding good – will introduce to concert playlist

    • Jeely Piece Song – version 1.1 is a better length for us

I thought you might be interested to hear the following version of I’ll See You In My Dreams, as well as Jo Brown’s – pretty good!

Well done to those who have been practising the tricky chords we have introduced lately.

We have come a long way on our ukulele journey. 🙂

Weather Woes!

Due to extreme weather conditions Dee Ukes had to cancel their gig at Panbride Churchblizzard Hall, which will be rescheduled at some point in the future.

Dee Ukes @ Douglas Church 06/03/18

However, despite the rain and sleet, no less than 16 of us had a lovely time at Douglas Church along with members of the Women’s Guild and other invited guests. Our audience was great fun right from the start and we ended with a long line-up of volunteers to do the Slosh. We were then treated to tea/coffee and cakes, including home-made clootie dumpling. Delicious!

Balgay Bowling Club

Dee Ukes @ Balgay Bowling Club 25/02/18

What a great time we all had at Balgay Bowing Club on Sunday. 18 Dee Ukers braved the cold wind to entertain in a nice hall with lots of smiling faces in front of us. We were all having such a good time we carried on singing for 1 hour and 40 minutes! The feedback at the end was very encouraging and we received a lovely message from Lorna (see below) who looked after us all so well on the day. Thank you Lorna. 🙂 I think we have inspired Lorna to play a musical instrument – perhaps a ukulele! Many thanks also to club members who had a whip-round at the end and gave us a very generous donation towards our current charity which is Dundee Dementia Resource Centre.

 Dear Liz

Thanks to you and your group for your performance yesterday. Your enthusiasm is infectious and it was great to hear folk singing along to everything from Al Jolson to Status Quo. It’s also great to see your group members smiling. They obviously enjoy what they do, and their talent shines through. I particularly liked the input from lady on the “mouthie” in the back row. Sorry, I didn’t catch her name. It was a great afternoon for our members and has got me thinking I could maybe learn a musical instrument after all. Maybe one day.
As you said, it’s a nice wee hall. If you ever need a venue for a charity performance, it’s maybe somewhere you would want to consider.

Thanks again for everything and pass on our thanks to your proficient and enthusiastic players.

Visit to St Mary’s Care Home

Dee Ukes @ St Mary’s Care Home, Monifieth 19th February 2018

Dee Ukes had a great time at St Mary’s Care Home in Monifieth where we are always treated to wonderful hospitality with fancy juice beforehand and tea/coffee afterwards. The residents there are so well looked after and were all given percussion instruments at the start by their activities’ co-ordinator Marie. Quite a few of the residents have a great sense of rhythm and many were able to sing along to most of our songs. To see so many smiling faces in front of us is always so rewarding. We’ll be back to see them all again in November. 🙂

Just a reminder that Sunday Sessions Folk Club is on this Sunday (25th Feb.) starting at 7pm. We practised the two songs we will be singing: Chatanooga Choo Choo and End of the Line. Hope to see many of you there.

We also practised Five Foot Two Medley, Loch Lomond, Grandma’s Feather Bed, Spread a Little Happiness.

We tried two new songs:

Annie’s Song – I have done a second version as we would like to try a couple of suspended chords which we have seen in other versions. Version 2 is on the Current Songsheets tab as well as  here. Annie’s Song Version 2

My Guy – We practised the introduction and ending patterns which most people managed fine. With a few more practices I think this will be another good one.

I will make Annie’s Song number 40 and My Guy number 44 on the Master Playlist.

The soup and toasties are going down well at our practices.

As usual the time just flew by. Thanks to everyone for making it fun again. 🙂

February Fun

Shrove Tuesday

Hope you didn’t overdo the pancakes on Tuesday!

Fun @ The Cabin

Dee Ukes @ The Cabin, Monifieth 14/02/18

What an amazing turn out for our gig at The Cabin in Monifieth where the members of Monifieth Women’s Group turned out in droves despite the cold weather and subsequent snowfall. They are a hardy lot! I think we had around 60/70 people singing along with us and joining in the fun. We even had a few brave souls dancing the Slosh along with our experts Pat and Marge. There was a great atmosphere and I’m sure everyone, including us,  had a wonderful time. The feedback at the end is extrememly encouraging and a few more ‘business cards’ were handed out. Woohoo!

Many thanks to Sheila Taylor for taking and sending me this photo on her swanky new camera.

Sending love to all my ukulele friends for Valentine’s Day.

Lochee Parish Church Ladies Group

Dee Ukes @ Lochee Parish Church Ladies Group 07/02/18

Dee Ukes had a great time today performing for Lochee Parish Church Ladies Group. We tried out a few of our new songs which went down really well with our enthusiastic audience. The time just flew by and the feedback we received at the end from quite a few individuals was very favourable. May, one of the organisers, said she had been round all of the members and everyone of them had a positive comment to make. Pauline, who had seen us before, made a point of coming over and saying how organised and professional we are! Thank you Pauline. 🙂

  • Caledonia
  • Loch Lomond
  • Grandma’s Feather Bed
  • Chatanooga Choo Choo
